Workshop Aim:
This unique workshop aims is to provide delegates with alternative evidence-based interventions for treating non-specific Low Back Pain (LBP). The choice or selection of intervention is generally based on source and cause of LBP. This practical workshop, underpinned by theory, mainly focuses on issues surrounding clinical biomechanics of the lower limb and FOOT – in addition to Lumbopelvic musculoskeletal issues. The workshop examines the deleterious effect they have on the kinetic-chain. Finally, using a range of simple assessments and treatment strategies the workshop offers an example of a multifactorial approach to treating LBP.

Workshop Rationale:
According to NICE Clinical Guidelines non-specific LBP affects between 30% and 50% of the UK adult population annually, and up to 80% will experience LBP at some stage in their life. Non-specific LBP is often of a mechanical or postural nature which frequently implicates the core, pelvic and sacroiliac regions. Research clearly demonstrates that LBP, like many other conditions, is best treated using a multifactorial and/or multidisciplinary approach. Put simply, it is quite clear that no one speciality or single treatment has all the answers. When we exclude medical conditions (e.g. malignancy, inflammatory diseases, infections etc.) and major trauma, lower-limb biomechanics (foot dysfunction) combined with lumbopelvic issues account for a significant proportion of non-specific LBP. Therefore, this workshop examines the benefits of using a combination of selective assessment and treatment strategies associated with the foot and lumbopelvic regions.

Content:
The course opens with an overview of NICE Clinical Guidelines on non-specific LBP which includes Epidemiology; Clinical timescales; Diagnostic considerations. It then proceeds to examine, in more detail, the two crucial regions (Foot & Lumbopelvic) often cited as being linked to non-specific LBP.
FOOT
• The research link between the Foot and chronic LBP
• The link between postural stability and the Foot.
• Clinical implications of sagittal plane blockage on the kinetic-chain
• Simple, but effective assessments of the Foot and 1st MTP joint
• Simple effective treatment strategies
LUMBOPELVIC
• Research link between Lumbopelvic region and chronic LBP
• Aspects of Form and Force closure
• Inner Core – musculature
• Outer Core – functional myofascial sling system
• Fascial slings in gait cycle
• Function of Gluteus Maximus
• Simple assessments for leg-length equality (differential diagnosis – actual v functional)
• Simple assessments for the Sacroiliac joint
• Treatment & Rehabilitation techniques for the lumbopelvic imbalances

Workshop Outcomes:

On completion of this workshop, delegates should have a better understanding of the concept and importance of a multifactorial approach with respect to the assessment and treatment of non-specific LBP. Moreover, delegates should possess a wider scope and range of assessment and treatment strategies to patient care when managing non-specific LBP – when the symptoms are linked to Foot and/or Lumbopelvic dysfunction.
