The Mindful Touch: Enhancing Connection in Everyday Practice and Oncology Care

7 Mar 2025

This morning presentation and practical workshop will delve into the concept of mindful touch and how it can be applied both in your everyday therapeutic practice and specifically with oncology clients. Mindful touch is a technique that emphasizes awareness, presence, and empathy, allowing the practitioner to connect deeply with the client, facilitating healing, comfort, and emotional support.

Workshop Focus:

1. Achieving Depth with Ease

We will explore how to engage with clients in a way that creates meaningful connections without strain. The idea is to be present in each moment, allowing the touch to communicate more than just physical sensation, but also emotional and energetic presence.

2. Resonating with All Clients, Regardless of Pathology
Mindful touch can be universally adapted to suit clients with different health conditions and needs. We will discuss how to assess and adjust the touch based on the individual’s situation—whether they are experiencing chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or managing a serious illness like cancer.

3. Oncology Case Study
A key component of the session will involve a detailed oncology case study. We’ll break down what a beneficial session would look like, the steps involved, and the key factors to consider when working with oncology clients, such as:

  • Physical considerations: (e.g. sensitivity, fatigue, treatment side effects)
  • Emotional and psychological aspects: (e.g. fear, grief, anxiety)
  • Communication and boundaries: Understanding when to adjust or withdraw touch for the client’s safety and comfort.

4. When It’s Not Within Your Remit

It’s crucial to understand the scope of your practice and when certain treatments or interventions may not be appropriate. In oncology, clients may have specific contraindications based on their treatment, medication, or stage of recovery. We'll discuss when it’s essential to refer clients to specialists or alter your approach to ensure the best possible outcome.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • Understand how to integrate mindful touch into your practice to enhance therapeutic connections.
  • Gain insight into working with oncology clients, considering their unique physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
  • Have the tools to assess when to apply mindful touch and when to refer clients for additional care.

This workshop aims to empower you to become more confident and intentional in your touch, creating a safe, supportive, and healing environment for all your clients, especially those facing cancer treatments.
